Pilanesberg National Park

“The Volcano that gave birth to a game reserve”

Pilanesberg National Park is set on 50 000 hectares of pristine unspoiled natural beauty. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a unique tourists destination surrounded by picturesque scenery and valleys. It is located in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province, adjacent to Sun City. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Park ranks among the largest of the parks in South Africa (it is in fact the fourth largest park). The beauty of Pilanesberg is reflected in a large central lake, the Mankwe Dam. Over time, wind and water have carved a spectacular landscape with rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets.

The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg Game Reserve- a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.

An abundance of wild life proliferate in 580 km of diverse and arresting bushveld terrain. The park is home to healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo – Africa’s “Big Five”. A wide variety of rare and common species exist like the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, as well as giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile. Its potential for supporting rare and endangered species such as Black Rhino, Roan, Sable, Tsessebe, foot-and-mouth free Buffalo and Wild Dog is particularly high.

Bird watching is excellent with over 300 species recorded. At Manyane, there is a walk-in aviary with over 80 species of indigenous birds. Numerous hides exist for the patient! Colourful hues, diverse habitats and panoramic views – don’t forget your camera!

De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre

The world famous De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre – A must for every visitor to Gauteng.

Nestled in the foothills of the Magaliesberg in South Africa’s North West Province, the De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre is situated an hour from Johannesburg and forty-five minutes from Pretoria. It is close to the Hartbeespoort Dam, a popular destination for day excursions from Pretoria and Johannesburg.

For several decades, De Wildt have been breeding cheetahs successfully in captivity. “Problem captured” cheetahs are also being re-introduced back into the wild. De Wildt are doing brilliant work, we love supporting them! This research centre also cares for other endangered species such as the African Wild Dog and Vulture. Come meet a king cheetah up close, and even adopt a cheetah if you like!

The tour is very popular and often booked out long in advance – booking is necessary.
